Introduction of Nagomi Town

 

The town of Nagomi is located in Kumamoto prefecture, central Kyushu, in the western part of Japan. It takes 95 minutes from Tokyo (1,072km) and 85 minutes from Seoul (631km) in South Korea by airplane. Nagomi Town is located in the northern part of Kumamoto prefecture, situated on the boundary between Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures. It has an area of 98 square kilometers, and its average temperatures are approximately 30 degrees centigrade in August and 5 degrees centigrade in January.The town's population is about 12,000 people (March 2006 figures).

It is located in a basin possessing a rich natural environment, surrounded by a range of hills 200-400 meters high. Agriculture is Nagomi's main industry, with significant and well-established productions in rice farming, vegetables and fruit. There are also many ancient tombs with archaeological finds and historical remains having been excavated from them, attesting to a long history of prosperity.

Etafunayama Ancient Tomb (National Treasure)

 

It is a tumulus made from around the latter half of the 5th to 6th century. (A tumulus is an ancient burial mound reserved for a leading figure of the time.) Approximately 200 archaeological finds excavated from the tomb are exhibited in Tokyo National Museum.

Mysterious remains, 'Tonkararin'

 

The mysterious tunnel-like ruins are 450 meter in length. Who and when it was made? What was its purpose for? Nobody knows. It is still a mystery.

Castle Ruins, 'Tanaka castle' (Historical Remains)

 

It was constructed between the 13th and 16th century and was one of the biggest castles in Kumamoto prefecture at that time.

A reconstructed old village, 'Higo Minka-mura'

 

Higo Minka-mura is a village featuring old private houses from around the country, which have been dismantled and reconstructed. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the past in beautiful natural surroundings. Opportunities for overnight stays are available.

 Hot Springs

 

Hot Spring, 'Kikusui Roman-kan' For health, healing and a good complexion.

 

It is effective in treating stiff shoulders, neuralgia, and fatigue. You can buy fresh local produce and there is a restaurant where you can taste broiled pieces of meat called Yakiniku as well as Chinese cuisine.
Open: All through the year except the end of December and the beginning of January.

Hot spring 'Abakan House' Where you can enjoy glorious views.

 

Experience magnificent seasonal views while soaking in the large hot spring bath. Various works of graphic art, wood sculptures and ceramic art are exhibited in the gallery.

Closed: Every Second Thursday

'Furusato Koryu Center' Where you can enjoy various hot springs.

 

Enjoy the health benefits of the soothing hot water, which is replaced daily. Huge rocks partition the large hot spring bathroom and open-air bathes are available as well. You can also taste Kama-meshi (seasoned rice) and Udon (wheat-flour noodles) at the restaurant.
